5 in the world Ons Jabeur defeated Caty McNally in the second round on Wednesday after fending off three match points in the fourth set. The Tunisian converted her third match chance in the tiebreak to secure a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7) triumph in two hours and 25 minutes after fending off two match points at 4-5 (15-40), one in the final set tiebreak, and two more at 4-5 (15-40). Jabeur has won once and lost once in San Jose after losing to Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon final, and she was unable to complete her initial match at the Canadian Open. She came close to losing to McNally in her opening match in Cincinnati, but after coming out on top, she will be much more assured moving into the next round. This year, the 27-year-old is 38-12. In Berlin and Madrid, she won two championships, while in Charleston, Rome, and Wimbledon, she came in second. The hardest surface for her this year has been hard courts, where she is 10-7 in 2022, with her best results being quarterfinal finishes in four tournaments.

A two-time Cincinnati Open semifinalist, Petra Kvitova is one victory away from reaching her fourth Cincinnati quarterfinal. The World No. 28, who avoided losing to Jil Teichmann in the first round, required just 66 minutes to defeat Sorana Cirstea on Wednesday. The Czech defeated the Romanian 6-2, 6-3 by saving both break points she faced and converting two in the first set and one in the second. In the opening round, the former World No. 2 defeated the World No. 21 by scores of 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (8-6), and 6-3 after saving a match point against Teichmann in the second set tiebreak. Kvitova is 19-15 this season as a result of the two victories. She triumphed in Eastbourne earlier this year to earn her 29th WTA championship. Kvitova has struggled to maintain consistency this year; her only other two noteworthy results have been quarterfinal finishes in Miami and Dubai. She hopes to continue the winning streak after having a successful debut in Cincinnati.
