Italy are off to a fantastic start in the 2022 Davis Cup Finals after defeating Croatia and Argentina in the opening couple of matches. Against Argentina, the men in blue won 2-1 with Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner proving their worth in the singles matches. Berrettini was up against Sebastian Baez in the first round and recorded a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win. It was Sinner’s turn next against Francisco Cerundolo. Despite a forgettable second set, the Italian held his nerve to record a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 victory. Argentina did get one back at the end when the doubles team of Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos won their match against Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.
Despite starting off strong, Sweden fell to defeat against Croatia in their second group stage match by a score of 2-1. Elias Ymer, who has been highly consistent so far in the tournament, continued his run of good form with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win against Borna Gojo. However, he was the only Swedish victor on the day as Borna Coric beat Mikael Ymer and the team of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic beat the pair of Elias and Mikael in doubles action.
Italy and Sweden are set to face each other in a Group A match on Sunday, September 18 in the 2022 Davis Cup. The group stage of the competition is scheduled to begin on September 13 and conclude on September 18 this year.
