On the second day of Group A action at the Unipol Arena in Bologna, hosts Italy defeated Croatia 3-0 in its debut. The second match of the day was an emotional rollercoaster that began with the home audience rallying behind Matteo Berrettini against Croatia’s No. 1 Borna Coric. Whatever Coric tried was quickly answered by Berrettini, who had been struggled early but won convincingly 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1. Borna Gojo was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Lorenzo Musetti, who rose to the occasion. In the doubles, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli of Italy overcame the formidable Croatian duo of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. (3). The Italians will face Argentina in their next match.
Argentina got off to a poor start in their 2022 Davis Cup Finals campaign after falling to a shock defeat against Sweden. On paper, Argentina had the much stronger squad but the Swedes’ singles players simply outplayed their opponents. Elias Ymer was the first in action and he beat Sebastian Baez 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). It was then Mikael Ymer’s turn who went up against Diego Schwartzman and recorded a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win. The doubles team of Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos saved face for the South Americans as they won their match against Andre Goransson and Elias Ymer.
Italy and Argentina are set to face each other in a Group A match on Friday, September 16 in the 2022 Davis Cup. The group stage of the competition is scheduled to begin on September 13 and conclude on September 18 this year.
