No. 10 in the world Hubert Hurkacz began his Canadian Open 2022 campaign with a bye into round two. His first match was against Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland, and it lasted just under two and a half hours. The 25-year-old won the match 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2 with 16 aces, 35 winners, and 76% of first-service points. He did, however, make 31 unforced errors. He’s had a good season so far, going 29-13 and winning the Halle Open singles title. He also won the doubles events at the Miami Open and the Stuttgart Open. He also had a successful run on hard courts, reaching the semifinals in Miami, Dubai, and the ATP Cup.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas, 34, has just reached the third round of the Canadian Masters, his best result to date. His success stemmed from straight-set victories over well-known players such as David Goffin and Diego Schwartzman. The Spaniard, who is now ranked 43rd, has improved his record to 21-18. A large portion of those victories came in his most recent tournaments in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, where he reached the final four. He won the Cordoba Open earlier this year and advanced to the final stages in Santiago. It should be noted that all of these tournaments were held on clay courts. His hard surface form isn’t as impressive, with his best result coming only this week.
