Holger Rune and Marc-Andrea Huesler will take on each other in the final of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Sunday, October 2.
For Holger Rune, this week has been productive. The fifth-seeded Dane in Sofia won his opening round 7-6, 7-6 over the powerful Tim van Rijthoven before coming back in the second round to end Lorenzo Sonego‘s six-match winning streak. He followed that up by persevering past Ilya Ivashka in another physically demanding three-setter to earn a matchup with top seed Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Prior to Sinner’s resignation late in the third set, Rune dropped the first set but won the next two to get to the championship match.
Huesler, 26, has spent the majority of his tennis career competing at the Futures and Challenger levels, but this week he has seemed quite at home on the ATP Tour. To reach his first Tour-level final, the Swiss player defeated Geoffrey Blancaneaux, Pablo Carreno Busta, Kamil Majchrzak, and Lorenzo Musetti with outstanding victories. Huesler has been playing well lately, reaching the semifinals of the ATP Winston-Salem Open as a qualifier and pushing Denis Shapovalov to five sets at the US Open’s opening round.
Marc-Andrea Huesler and Holger Rune are scheduled to face each other in the final of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Sunday, October 2. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 26 and end on October 2.
