Wednesday at the same stage of the 2022 ATP Canadian Open, Hubert Hurkacz and Emil Ruusuvuori will square off in a rematch of their second-round match from last week.
The Poland player would want to steer clear of the roller-coaster ride that has been this. Hubert Hurkacz lost his opening round match at Wimbledon and in Washington last week after winning the championship at Halle. Curiously, Hurkacz had lost in the first round of the Stuttgart Open, a match that took place right before Halle Open. Hurkacz lost to this specific opponent in a hard-fought pair of sets after entering his opening match of the US Open Series. Hurkacz, the champion of the 2021 Miami Masters, advanced to the semifinals of both that competition and the Dubai Open this year. As a result, his hard court record isn’t as poor as his recent performances might want to suggest, but he would be desperate to go past these first round defeats.
Emil Ruusuvuori defeated Stan Wawrinka in a hard-fought three-set match to advance to the second round, however it took him three sets. Ruusuvuori defeated his Swiss opponent 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a battle that lasted two hours and twelve minutes to set up a rematch with Hurkacz in as little as two weeks. For Ruusuvuori, the first set was a piece of cake because all it took to win was a service break in the second game. The writing was on the wall when Ruusuvuori broke Wawrinka once more in the fifth game of the second set. But Wawrinka came back, breaking him twice in a row to secure the equaliser. But Ruusuvuori caught a break in the sixth game of the decisive, and he later made sure Wawrinka couldn’t mount a late comeback to clinch his next spot. Can he now win two straight matches in this competition and against Hurkacz to make it two in two?
Hubert Hurkacz and Emil Ruusuvuori are scheduled to face one another in the round of 32 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Wednesday, August 10. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
