Roger Federer (5 titles)

The most successful one of the big three is none other than Roger Federer. He won five consecutive US Open titles from 2004 to 2008, setting an Open Era record. Federer trounced the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray respectively.

The most entertaining match of them all was the 2007 final against Djoker Nole. Although it was a straight-sets victory for Federer, Djokovic pushed him to the limit in the first two sets, forcing tie-breaks. Both players were beyond exhausted as the match reached it conclusion, with the score-line reading 7–6(7–4), 7–6(7–2), 6–4 in Federer’s favour.

Rafael Nadal (4 titles)

Although Nadal had started playing his best tennis before the 2010s decade, he opened his US Open account during that time. Unlike Federer, Nadal did not win consecutive editions of the Grand Slam. His first win came in 2010 when he beat Djokovic in the final.

The Spaniard would then have to endure a three year wait before getting the better of the Serbian yet again in the final of the 2013 US Open. The 2017 success was a comparatively simpler task as he brushed aside Kevin Anderson in the final in straight sets. Nadal’s final US Open triumph came in 2019 when he defeated Daniil Medvedev in a five-set thriller of a final. The score at the end read 7–5, 6–3, 5–7, 4–6, 6–4.

Novak Djokovic (3 titles)

In the period from 2010 to 2013, Novak Djokovic had reached the final of every single US Open. However he could only emerge victorious in one. After falling to Nadal in 2010, the two met once again in the final the following year. Only this time, it was the Serbian who played the superior tennis to win his first ever US Open singles title.

After a four-year wait, the Serbian found himself holding the prestigious Grand Slam trophy in 2015 which saw him get the better of Roger Federer in the final. Federer and Djokovic had faced each other in the same stage of the competition in 2007, but it was the Swiss who had won that time. Djokovic’s latest US Open success came in 2018 when he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in the final to win the crown for a third time.
