Holger Rune and Marc-Andrea Huesler will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 ATP Montpellier Open on February 9.
Holger Rune has a history of recovering from deficits to win matches at all levels of competition. However, against Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open, he once found himself in the opposite situation and blew a sizable lead. He had multiple match points at 6-*5 in the decisive set, led 5-2, and jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the super tiebreaker. The young Dane must have taken the loss hard because he had a chance to advance to the season’s first grand slam quarterfinals. The Davis Cup last weekend saw him return to action and easily win both of his singles matches against Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri, proving that this setback did not have any mental impact on him.
In each of the previous two seasons, the former Boys’ French Open champion won 21 matches on indoor hard courts, and his success on the surface in the latter stages of 2022 propelled him into the top-10. During the European indoor swing of the previous year, he competed in four straight championship games, winning two of them at the Stockholm and Paris Masters tournaments by defeating Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas, respectively.
In the latter half of 2022, Marc-Andrea Huesler established himself on the main tour, and he has since made a confident start to 2023. He defeated Alexander Zverev at the Davis Cup last weekend, and so far in the new year, he has won six of a possible eight matches. The powerful Swiss player won at least ten matches on indoor hard courts each of the previous four seasons. In an indoor tournament in Sofia last year, he won his first ATP title, defeating none other than Holger Rune in the match that decided the match.
