In the second round of the 2022 US Open on Thursday, world number 15 Beatriz Haddad Maia will attempt to defeat former champion Bianca Andreescu.
Haddad Maia had accomplished something few others in Grand Slam tennis history had in her opening round match against Anna Konjuh as the hourglass reached one. In fact, Beatriz Haddad Maia‘s 6-0, 6-0 victory over Konjuh marked the first time since Naomi Osaka achieved that result at the 2018 US Open. Additionally, it was the first time Ash Barty had pulled off this double-bagel since the Australian Open in 2021, and it occurred at a Grand Slam. Haddad Maia was elevated as one of the top 10 favourites for this year’s US Open as a result of this victory. With the usual suspects like Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur clearly ahead of her, she is now 22/1 to win the title. She is hoping to demonstrate that her victory in the first round was no fluke as she faces Andreescu in the second round, who will present a formidable opponent.
It’s interesting to note that after the first set of the Haddad Maia against Bianca Andreescu match finished, it appeared as though the outcome would even be similar. A double bagel had a good chance of happening. Tan, who had dropped the first set to a love tiebreaker, however, recovered with an early break in the second set and finished the tiebreaker to force a deciding. But Andreescu rediscovered her rhythm, and after a few breaks, she finished the match in an hour and 42 minutes, winning 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Before choosing to skip the Cincinnati Open on the US Open Series, the Canadian had competed in the Toronto Open and advanced to the third round there. A victory today is a wonderful start, but she will now face a competitor who is not only ranked higher but has also been in excellent form all season.
Beatriz Haddad Maia and Bianca Andreescu are scheduled to face one another in the second round match of the US Open 2022 on Thursday, September 1. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
