The American tennis sensation hit eight aces in her first round match and recorded four out of 12 break points.
At her home Grand Slam, 12th seed Coco Gauff got off to a perfect start to her 2022 US Open campaign as she beat Leolia Jeanjean in straight sets. The score at the end of the first round match was 6-2, 6-3 in Gauff’s favour. The American tennis sensation hit eight aces in the match and recorded four out of 12 break points. “I was really nervous, I was feeling the pressure,” Gauff said. “It’s my first back in the home slam after a final. To be frank, I didn’t think I was going to be on Ashe today. Opening the women’s draw on Ashe, too, at that,” the 18-year-old added.
“But it is nice to break the barrier. I really didn’t think about it until after the match was over and then I walked out [to salute] the crowd and said, Wait, I haven’t done this before. That’s why I told them it was my first win on Ashe.”
Elena-Gabriela Ruse showed great character in her opening round match at the US Open, coming back from a set down to take the win. Ruse beat Daria Saville 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that might not have seen her record an ace, but convert six out of nine break points. The Romanian might be unseeded at the Grand Slam but she is a prolific singles player.
Coco Gauff and Elena-Gabriela Ruse are scheduled to face one another in a second round match of the US Open 2022 on Wednesday, August 31. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
