US tennis sensation Coco Gauff will kick off her 2022 WTA San Diego Open campaign against compatriot Robin Montgomery. Gauff displayed a decent performance at the 2022 US Open, going as far as the last eight before being eliminated by Caroline Garcia. The American defeated Zhang Shuai, Madison Keys, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, and Leolia Jeanjean over the course of the Grand Slam. She was seeded higher than Garcia when they two faced one another in the quarter-final but the Frenchwoman was in red hot form and recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Robin Montgomery’s performance in the San Diego qualifiers were exceptional. The American beat the likes of Zhang Shuai and Bernarda Pera to make her place in the main draw of the WTA 500 tournament. Her last match was against Pera which saw her record a comeback 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory. The 18-year-old can very well shock Gauff in the first round given her recent form.
