After much delay due to rain, world no. 8 Coco Gauff was finally in action in the first round of the 2022 WTA San Diego Open on Wednesday. The American tennis sensation was up against teenager Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-3. Gauff found herself trailing Montgomery 3-2 in the first set but won the net four games to take the set in her favour. Midway through the second set, rain lashed down on the courts of San Diego and play had to postponed at 3-2. Gauff picked up where she left off the following day, taking the second set to advance to the round of 16 of the WTA 500 competition.
The American will face 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu next. Andreescu was scheduled to face Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the first round but after the Brazilian’s withdrawal, she faced Pan Pacific Open champion Liudmila Samsonova. The first set was a closely fought affair and was settled in a tie-break i favour of the Canadian. Samsonova came out on top after a second set but a dominant display in the third saw Andreescu record a 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-2 victory.
Gauff and Andreescu have never faced one another before in competitive tennis and although the former has tasted more success this season, the Canadian is one of the best in the world currently and her wealth of experience will certainly come into play.
