Garcia and Siegemund will take on each other in the third round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 21.
For the second straight match, Caroline Garcia competed at the Rod Laver Arena. In contrast to her straightforward 6-3, 6-0 victory over qualifier and world No. 190 Katherine Sebov, the fourth seed had to work hard to defeat former US Open semifinalist Leylah Fernandez, 7-6, 7-5, after surviving eight of nine breakpoint opportunities. She fell behind the Canadian player by a break in the first set, lost by scores of 0-4 and 2-5 in the tiebreak, and then was faced with a set point in the second set. She continues to hold the record for the most victories on the tour since the start of the grass-court swing last year thanks to this arduous victory, even though it didn’t last more than two hours.
In both of the six hours of action-filled matches, Laura Siegemund needed comeback victories. The 34-year-old defeated Lucia Bronzetti, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, then defeated Irina-Camelia Begu, the 27th seed, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Against the Romanian, she failed to serve out the first set, and in the second set, she was faced with seven breakpoints (saved all). Since her return from a six-month injury break in February 2022, they were just her fifth and sixth tour-level main draw victories. The former top-30 player, who is currently outside of the top 150, is about to play the third round of a major for just the fourth time overall and has already equaled her best tournament performance.
