On Sunday, the 2022 WTA Poland Open final will feature Caroline Garcia of France taking on Ana Bogdan of Romania.
Fifth seed Caroline Garcia easily defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the semifinal on Saturday to advance to her second consecutive season final, a day after breaking the 18-match unbeaten clay streak of World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. On Saturday, the Frenchwoman defeated the 10th-seeded Italian in just 65 minutes, bringing her overall record against Paolini to 3-0. Garcia saved the lone break point she faced while breaking Paolini twice in each set. On her way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory, she also served six aces and won 80% of the points on her first serve. The World No. 45 started her campaign by defeating Misaki Doi of Japan and Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy in the first and second rounds, respectively. She overcame Swiatek 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 on Friday to earn her first career victory over a current world number one. On Sunday, the 28-year-old will participate in her 12th WTA final. She has won eight championships and will want to capture her third clay-court crown.
Without dropping a set this week, Ana Bogdan won her fourth match in a row in straight sets to advance to the first-ever WTA final. In the match, the Romanian had 14 break point possibilities, and eight of them were successful. Her opponent, in comparison, only had 11 opportunities to break, and she took advantage of six of them. Baindl double-failed eight times during the two hours and thirteen minute competition, whereas Bogdan was much more disciplined, not double-failing even once. Bogdan defeated seventh-seeded Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory to start his season. After the strong beginning, she kept getting better, destroying Katerina Siniakova 6-0, 6-4 in the second round and Laura Pigossi of Brazil 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinal. The 29-year-old ITF champion, who has won 14 times overall and six times on clay, will be motivated to end the week with a first victory.
Caroline Garcia and Ana Bogdan will face each other in the final round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Sunday, July 31. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from July 25 and end on July 31 this year.
