Daniel Elahi Galan broke into the top 200 on the ATP rankings in 2019 and has been in the 102nd-200th zone ever since. Galan broke into the top 100 for the first time after reaching the quarterfinals as a qualifier in Hamburg, helping him finish the week ranked 99th in the world. And, after a shocking first-round win against Fabio Fognini here in Umag, the in-form Galan has every chance of climbing even further up the rankings. Galan overcame his Italian opponent in three sets despite being an 11/10 underdog, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to go to the second round.

Giulio Zeppieri, 20, has competed in four main draw matches at the top level prior to this competition at Umag. He had yet to win his first ATP match. Zeppieri overcame a set disadvantage against the 90th-ranked Pedro Cachin to earn a shock victory – he had gone into the match with 8/5 odds to beat his opponent – and advance to the second round. Zeppieri won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a nearly two-hour marathon to set up this meeting with Galan. Despite Cachin’s 11 aces, Zeppieri was broken only once during the whole match. Zeppieri never looked back after that, shrugging off the defeat in the first set to claim the victory.
