Linda Fruhvirtova has the potential to become a tennis legend. It only seems a matter of time before she makes her WTA Tour debut in grand style. She most recently advanced to the second round of the US Open as a qualifier, defeating the likes of Chloe Paquet and Xinyu Wang along the way. Similarly, she reached the fourth round of the Miami Open earlier this year after upsetting experienced players such as Danka Kovinic, Elise Mertens, and Victoria Azarenka. In addition, Linda won the ITF title in Cancun in February. Here in Chennai, she took advantage of a relatively open draw and advanced past Taiwanese Liang En-Shuo and, later, veteran Swede Rebecca Peterson.
Varvara Gracheva, the second seed, has done well in the 2022 Chennai Open, sweeping aside Mariia Tkacheva and Carol Zhao in straight sets, losing only 11 games in the process. With these victories, the 22-year-old Russian improves to 22-23. So far, Gracheva has had a mediocre year. She arrived in India on a 10-match losing streak, her most recent victory coming in a Challenger event in June. She had lost all of her first-round matches in the US Open, including a couple to lower-ranked opponents like Peyton Stearns and Ysaline Bonaventure. Her season hasn’t gone as planned, with her best results being a third-round appearance in the French Open and a round-of-16 appearance in WTA Dubai (as a qualifier).
