Daniel Evans of Britain will play 3rd seed Taylor Fritz of the United States on Thursday in the third round of the 2022 ATP Citi Open.
In the second round on Wednesday, Taylor Fritz got off to a fast start in Washington by defeating Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. The Australian was defeated 6-4, 6-3 by the third seed, who required just an hour and 12 minutes to win. Fritz lost against the Australian 3-11 in aces, but the American won 91 percent of the matches on his first serve, avoided both break points he faced, and won 3 of 5 points to raise his season record to 30-11. In what is already shaping up to be the strongest year of his career, Fritz won his first ATP 1000 title at Indian Wells and added a second title to his collection at Eastbourne, where he had previously won his sole ATP title. Fritz also achieved his finest Grand Slam performance of the year at Wimbledon, where he made his first-ever major quarterfinal appearance. He will advance to a seventh season quarterfinal with a victory on Thursday.
40 in the world Daniel Evans also got off to a fast start, cruising past fellow countryman Kyle Edmund in the first turn. Evans won the first set in just 23 minutes, allowing just two points on his serve and seven points on his return. He also jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second game before being broken for the first time in the match by World No. 639. However, Evans came back in the following game to win it 6-1, 6-2 and end the 64-minute match. With the victory, Evans’ season record now stands at 14–16. He hasn’t had much success on the tour level aside from a semifinal finish in Sydney. The 32-year-old did, however, triumph in Nottingham to capture his ninth Challenger championship.
Taylor Fritz and Daniel Evans will face each other in the third round of the 2022 Citi open on Thursday, August 4. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
