Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal took a hard-fought victory against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round of the 2022 French Open. The King of Clay advanced to the quarter-final where he will face world no. 1 Novak Djokovic. The Serbian beat Diego Schwartzman in what was a rather simple straight-sets affair. Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev won his match against Spanish player Bernabe Zapata Miralles in a match that had a nail-biter of a first set. Denmark’s Holger Rune kept his fine run of form going as well, defeating home favourite Hugo Gaston to move on to the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Nadal survives Auger-Aliassime test

Rafael Nadal won a thrilling Roland Garros match on Sunday, surviving a significant scare from Felix Auger-Aliassime to set up a confrontation with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard weathered an onslaught from the Canadian to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and improve to 109-3 in the clay-court major in front of a raucous crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier. For the 11th time in his career, Nadal lost the first set in a match at Roland Garros. The 13-time champion, however, maintained his cool and displayed his winning mindset to progress after four hours and 23 minutes on a court where he has enjoyed so much success.

Djokovic flies past Schwartzman

At Roland Garros, Novak Djokovic continues to win in straight sets. On Sunday afternoon, the top seed defeated Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round of the clay-court Grand Slam in Paris. In a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 triumph, the World No. 1 saved seven break points while converting six of his own to set up a quarter-final meeting with 13-time champion Rafael Nadal in the French capital. Djokovic is currently 16-0 in fourth-round matches at the clay-court Grand Slam, and he is on his way to a 13th consecutive quarter-final appearance in Paris.

Zverev downs Zapata Miralles

Alexander Zverev may have won in straight sets at Roland Garros on Sunday afternoon, but the third seed’s journey to victory against Bernabe Zapata Miralles was anything but straightforward. Zverev won a long first set in a dramatic tie-break and was forced to come back from a break down in the second to win 7-6(11), 7-5, 6-3 against the No. 131-ranked Spanish qualifier. Zverev’s ability to hit through the ball off both wings made the difference on Court Suzanne Lenglen, despite his lack of consistency throughout. Zverev hit 34 winners compared to only 13 for Zapata Miralles, but he’ll be hoping to cut down on his unforced errors.
