On Monday, the 2022 ATP Hamburg Open's first round match pits Italian Fabio Fognini against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene.
Fabio Fognini is not having a great year since this year has been more about playing down tennis than his usual struggles of going up and down the court. Even though the Italian’s prime is obviously long gone, he should still be able to play better tennis. 14-14 is not a good score, and his overall rating fell to number 64 as a result. He went across a motivated Sebastian Baez last week in Bastad, who easily defeated him in two sets. In the end, the Argentine advanced to the final. Overall, the week went well because Fognini and Simone Bolleli played excellent doubles. With an 11-10 record on clay this season, Fognini performed reasonably well, but he needs some victories to boost his self-confidence.
The main reason Aljaz Bedene hasn’t played much tennis this year is injuries. Due to ongoing injuries, the Slovene player made his official retirement announcement for later this year. These competitions he’s playing in are kind of a farewell tour for him since he’ll do it back home in the Davis Cup. His four victories have all come on clay, and despite playing well at Roland Garros, he was defeated by Novak Djokovic. There have only been two official matches since, both of which he lost on grass. He last used a racquet to play an exhibition match against Djokovic in Bosnia last week. Although it is obvious that tennis is no longer on his mind, he can nevertheless prevail in games.
Fabio Fognini and Aljaz Bedene will take on each other on Tuesday, July 19 in the first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
