Top seed Dan Evans’ 2022 San Diego Open campaign will begin with a round of 16 tie against Japan’s Taro Daniel. Evans was a part of the 2022 US Open earlier where he displayed a decent performance in reaching the third round. However, the Brit was beaten by Marin Cilic in an absolute classic Grand Slam match that ended 7-6 (13-11), 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 7-5 in the Croatian’s favour. Evans did however defeat the likes of James Duckworth and Jiri Vesely at the Flushing Meadows. He displayed quite an impressive form at the Canadian Open earlier in August where he reached the semi-finals after beating the likes of Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.

Taro Daniel advanced to the round of 16 of the 2022 San Diego Open after beating Emilio Nava 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Daniel hit two aces in the match and recorded win percentages of 68% and 82% on the first and second serves respectively. The Japanese tennis player also converted four out of eight break points and won eight service games in the contest.
