British tennis star Emma Raducanu has had a tough start to her 2023 campaign. The former US Open champion has only played a couple of WTA Tour level tournaments this year and her performance has not been great. Raducanu has been riddled with injuries and health issues since the start of the year, withdrawing from the ATX Open earlier due to a reported case of tonsillitis. Her latest setback came just hours before the Eisenhower Cup from which she had to withdraw citing health concerns. The Brit has only played the ASB Classic and Australian Open so far this season, withdrawing from the first and losing in the second round of the Grand Slam. She is scheduled to participate in the Indian Wells Masters where she will face Danka Kovinic in the first round.

Raducanu had a bright start to her last WTA Tour level tournament, the Australian Open, where she beat Tamara Korpatsch convincingly in the first round. Many had predicted her to at least reach the last 16 of the tournament but she was beaten in the very next round by an in form Coco Gauff. Before that, Raducanu withdrew from the last 16 of the ASB Classic, which was her first competition of the year.

It is not yet known what is the exact reason for her withdrawal from the Eisenhower Cup. She could have an injury concern or she might still be suffering from the after effects of tonsillitis. However, one thing is for certain. The Brit will be eager to play and deliver at the Indian Wells Masters and the subsequent Miami Open. Both competitions are highly prestigious and a good performance in either one would do wonders for her confidence right now.

Donna Vekic upsets Caroline Garcia in Monterrey final

In the championship match of the WTA 250 tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, on Sunday, Donna Vekic defeated top seed Caroline Garcia 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to win her fourth championship of her career. Vekic earned her first Top 10 victory of the year and her first championship since 2021 with the victory. On Monday, Vekic will move up to No. 24, continuing her ascent after missing this time last year due to injury. With her win on Sunday, she has a 14-2 record to start the 2023 season, one win behind the tour’s leaders in match wins, Garcia and Belinda Bencic, who have 15 wins each.

“It was a crazy match until the end, [Garcia] was playing so well, playing so deep,” Vekic said, after her win. “I was trying to win as many points as I could. It was not easy, but I’m really happy to win. It’s been a great start of the year for me. If the title didn’t come now, I believe that it would have come soon. So I’ve been playing good tennis, and I just need to keep working hard and hopefully stay healthy, and I’m sure I will keep having good results.”
