Tennis player Elise Mertens of Belgium has revealed that she is dissolving her Partnership with trainer Simon Goffin. Goffin joined Mertens’ coaching team in the off-season. Elise Mertens made the decision to end their collaboration after the first seven months of the 2022 campaign. “I want to inform you that my collaboration with my coach Simon Goffin has come to an end. I’m very grateful for his support and advice, but our different views on how to become a better player have proven to be too challenging. I wish Simon all the best and I’m sure he will find a new challenge very soon,” Mertens mentioned on Instagram story.

Not a good year in single’s competition

Mertens, who was once ranked No. 12 in doubles, hasn’t fared well in the singles division this year, having only advanced to two quarterfinals. The situation in doubles, however, is quite different because Mertens, the top-ranked doubles player in the world, has reached six doubles finals this year.

To advance to the Wimbledon final on Friday, Mertens and Zhang Shuai overcame Desirae Krawczyk and Danielle Collins. Mertens still aspires to be a successful singles player, which is undoubtedly one of the factors that led to a coaching change. Mertens lost to Ons Jabeur in the singles round of 16 at Wimbledon.

Despite Mertens’ strong performance against Jabeur, the second-ranked Tunisian won 7-6 (9) 6-4. In the first set, Mertens trailed by a break twice, but she twice came back and forced a tie-break. Then Martens had a chance to defeat Jabeur in the opening set, but she wasted a total of five set points.

Jabeur defeated Mertens in the tenth game of the second set, while the Belgian was serving to stay in the match, after winning the closely contested first set. Jabeur praised Mertens as a “very good opponent.” “Playing her is never simple, and during the tiebreak, I had to really push myself. I couldn’t picture myself going up against her in three sets.”
