Alex Eala and Lucie Havlickova are scheduled to face each other on Saturday, September 10 in the final of the 2022 US Open juniors.
Lucie Havlickova, the reigning French Open girls’ singles champion, did the same, defeating No. 7 seed Diana Shnaider, 6-4, 6-4, in just over an hour. The game was a little more dramatic than the score indicates. Havlickova raced out to a 5-1 lead in the first, but Shnaider responded by winning 12 of the next 14 points. Havlickova eventually held off a Jovic-esque comeback by serving for the set on her second attempt. The following set was a little simpler. But there were no hard feelings: after competing against each other, Havlickova and Shnaider took the court together to compete in the girls’ doubles draw. The No. 1 seeded pair won both their quarterfinal and semifinal matches.
For the girls’ singles title, Havlickova will face No. 10 seed Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. Eala, who has already won two Grand Slam girls’ doubles titles, defeated Victoria Mboko, a Canadian and 2022 Wimbledon girls’ singles semifinalist, 6-1, 7-6. Eala won the first set in just 26 minutes, while No. 9-seeded Mboko only won six of 17 points off her first serve. The hard-hitting Canadian improved that statistic exponentially throughout the match and even served for the second set, but was broken after three unforced errors. Mboko double faulted on match point in the tiebreak, allowing Eala to advance to her first-ever girls’ singles final.
