Top seed and world number seven Novak Djokovic improved his record against Vasek Pospisil to 6-0 after defeating the Canadian in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Friday. The 35-year-old, who had beaten Pablo Andjar in the second round 6-0, 6-3, had a difficult start against Pospisil on Friday. Both players served well in the first set, with neither being broken. The set eventually required a tiebreaker, which Djokovic won 5-1. The Canadian responded by winning four straight points to tie the game at 5-5. However, the Serb won the next two points to take the set. Djokovic broke early in the second set to take a 3-0 lead, but Pospisil came back to win the next three games in a row. Djokovic then got another break in the eighth game and won the final three games to win the match 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Russia’s Roman Safiullin, who defeated Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Friday, will face Djokovic in the semifinals. Safiullin won 90% of the points (26 of 29) in the 69-minute match thanks to his first serve. He saved the only break point he faced in the match, converting three of the eight that he held for a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Safiullin did not break in his previous match, which he won 6-1, 6-4 over Argentina’s Tomás Martin Etcheverry. The Russian dropped a set in the first round against Hugo Grenier of France, but recovered to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The 24-year-old, who is ranked 104th in the world, improved his tour record to 9-4. He will play in his second tour-level semifinal of the season on Saturday, after reaching the final four in Marseille.
