The ATP Tour 250 tennis competition known as the men’s Swedish Open takes place in July in Bastad, Sweden. The International Swedish Hard Court Championships were the name of the competition when it was first held in 1948. The men’s competition took place on the Grand Prix tennis circuit between 1970 and 1989. South African Eric Sturgess won the first three competitions. Ilie Nastase (1971), Bjorn Borg (1974, 1978-1979), Mats Wilander (1982-1983, 1985), and Rafael Nadal are some more well-known winners (2005). In order to make room for the new hotel under the coastal bleachers, the stadium where the tournament is hosted underwent renovation in 2002.

Andrey Rublev’s recent career has been a roller coaster, and that was evident as he stepped the court against Federico Coria in the second round. Laslo Djere has not won consecutive matches this season, having previously done so in April in Monte-Carlo. While Rublev will be a difficult opponent for obvious reasons, Djere’s performances will give his opponent pause for thinking. While these two have never competed at the top level previously, they have met twice on the Challenger circuit, with a score of one apiece. Their most recent encounter took place on clay in 2016.
