Grigor Dimitrov has always performed well on hard court surfaces, with a record of 244 wins to 159 losses on that surface. He has only won 10 of his 21 hardcourt matches this year, and only three of his eight US Open Series matches. Dimitrov was up a set against Steve Johnson in the first round of Wimbledon when his groin appeared to give way. He had to withdraw from that match, and while the Bulgarian player has since returned, he has struggled to make it count. Dimitrov would like to repeat what he did the first time he played on home soil, when he won the title in 2017.

Ilya Ivashka had a difficult first round encounter, but he would be relieved to have defeated Mikael Ymer. Ivashka was on court for three hours and twenty-four minutes for his opening match against his Swedish opponent, which he won to secure his place opposite Dimitrov. He had two chances to serve out the first set, at 5-4 and 6-5, but in the end, Ivashka needed four set-points in the tie-breaker to take the lead. To level things up, Ymer broke in the third game of the second set, and a string of breaks in the decider meant there was nothing to choose between them. Ivashka earned a match-point in the 12th game to seal the deal.
