Denis Shapovalov, the third seed from Canada, will play China's Yibing Wu on Thursday in the second round of the 2023 ATP Dallas Open.

Yibing Wu became only the second Chinese man to enter the ATP Top 100 after reaching the Cleveland Challenger final, where he was defeated by Aleksandar Kovacevic. Wu joins fellow countryman Zhizhen Zhang in attempting to make an imprint on the main circuit. He defeated Michael Mmoh of the USA in three sets in his opening-round match. Wu won his seventh ATP Tour main draw match in two hours and five minutes. The first two sets were traded between the two players, but the 23-year-old Chinese man improved in the championship match. In the third set, he out-aced Mmoh and avoided all four break points on his serve. Critically, Wu’s victory and second draw spot were secured by the one break point he converted in the third set.
At this point in the season, Denis Shapovalov will make a comeback in a setting that is somewhat more foreign. At the Dallas Open, where he will take on the ATP’s mover of the week, Yibing Wu, Shapovalov will make his main tournament debut. Shapovalov typically participates in the annual trip to the Middle East in Europe. But in order to achieve excellent results in the March Sunshine Double, he has revised his itinerary. After his stay in Dallas, he will only make one more trip to Acapulco, according to his timetable. He achieved his best season at Tour level last year, winning 22 matches on hard courts. With a 4-2 record so far this year, Shapovalov lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal of the Adelaide International. He lost to Hubert Hurkacz in five sets in the third round of the Australian Open.
