Federico Delbonis is a history-maker when it comes to Argentine tennis. The 31-year-old has had a fine career so far, managing to finish in ATP’s top 100 male tennis players in the world consecutively for an incredible nine years. His mastery of the clay surface is something that is comparable to the greats of the game. Delbonis has taken part in four ATP finals so far and all of the have been on clay. The Argentine even emerged victorious in a couple of occassions. He also has victories over the likes of Andy Murray and Roger Federer on a clay surface. However, what makes Delbonis such a historic player in Argentina is his victory over Ivo Karlovic in the Davis Cup in 2016. It earned Argentina its first ever Davis Cup victory.
From the time he turned professional in 2009 to 2013, Delbonis won five Challenger and Futures titles. Delbonis reached his first ATP semifinal at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany, in 2011. He won six consecutive matches and needed to win three qualifying matches to qualify for the main draw, but he was defeated in three sets by Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Fabio Fognini has been around the block for quite a while now and has competed against Delbonis a number of times so far. Out of the nine matches they have played against one another, Fognini has won five while the Argentine has recorded four victories.
