Alex De Minaur won his opening match 6-1, 6-1, 7-5 over Hugo Dellien before eliminating Jack Draper by 5-7, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3. He also defeated Liam Broady in the third round in 2 hours and 25 minutes. The Aussie got going right away, although he didn’t have a break point in either of the first two sets, he did convert one of one in the first set and one of seven break points in the second to go up 2-0. De Mianur performed admirably in the third set as well, breaking in the opening game, but he battled to serve out the match at 5-3 as Broady won two straight games to even the score. The Australian player won 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 after saving four break points and converting a fourth match point in the 11th game to regain his one break edge. De Minaur, seeded 19th, also reached the Eastbourne semifinals before the grass court major and is now one victory away from reaching a second Grand Slam quarterfinal.

For the second year in a row, Cristian Garin is back at Wimbledon’s round of 16. He had won the tournament’s opening three matches in his fourth attempt last year. He entered the competition this year having dropped both of his games on grass, but he has emerged as a different performer in the majors. In Wimbledon before defeating the 29th seed Jenson Brooksby on Saturday, Garin defeated Sweden’s player Elias Ymer and Hugo Grenier in the first two rounds, respectively, by score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-1, 6-1. Following his victory on Friday, the world no. 43 increased his season record to 15-15. He took a two sets to one lead after breaking Brooksby twice in the first set and twice in the second set. The Chilean player won the fourth set and the match by 6-2, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 after Brooksby comeback in the third set.
