Matteo Berrettini has withdrawn from Italy’s Davis Cup Finals this week. The No. 16 and 2021 Wimbledon finalist hasn’t played since injuring himself in the final of the Naples Open over a month ago. “The medical experts have advised that I am still not able to compete at my highest level following the foot injury l suffered in Naples,” he said. “There is no greater honor than representing [Italy] so the news is very hard to take. I will still travel to Malaga with the team to support in any way I can.”

Berrettini, who has been plagued by illness and injury all season, including missing Wimbledon due to an untimely COVID-19 diagnosis, will compete alongside compatriot Jannik Sinner. Two weeks ago, the 21-year-old also withdrew due to injury. The Italians will face the United States in a quarterfinal match played indoors on a hard court. Lorenzo Musetti, 20, and the experienced Fabio Fognini will lead the team.

Italy Davis Cup team

Captain: Filippo Volandri

Out : Jannik Sinner (15), Matteo Berrettini (16)

Team: Lorenzo Musetti (23), Lorenzo Sonego (45)

Doubles: Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli: They won two of their three matches together in September

As a result, Matteo Berrettini will finish the 2022 season with a 38-12 win/loss record, winning two titles along the way – the Stuttgart Open and the Queen’s Club Championships in London. Overall, the Italian won more than $2.1 million in prize money, but he will be disappointed to have fallen out of the Top-10 due to unexpected, albeit regular, injuries.

Team Italy has been drawn in the quarterfinals against the United States, which has a very strong squad that includes Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Jack Sock. The team will face either Canada or Germany in the semifinals, while Spain, Croatia, Australia, and the Netherlands compete for a spot in the summit clash in the bottom half of the draw.
