Alejandro Davidovich Fokina fought back against Hubert Hurkacz to advance to the second round 7-6(4), 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6. (10-8).
Despite being down a break twice in the fifth set against Hubert Hurkacz and squandering three match points in the third set against him, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina fought back to advance to the second round 7-6(4), 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6. (10-8). Davidovich Fokina was left shaking his head for a significant portion of the decisive set. The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters finalist for this year was leading two sets to none and had a 40/0 advantage when he served for the match at 5-3 in the third. On those three points, the Spaniard played three first serves but failed to score.
“Really I don’t know how I won this match. He had in the fifth set [a] 5-4 [lead] and [he was] serving with the new balls. I was [thinking], ‘Okay, let’s put the return in and let’s see what happens,’” Davidovich Fokina, who will face Jiri vesely next, said in his on-court interview as he laughed. “But I’m so happy for the win today because I was struggling a little bit. To beat Hurkacz on grass — he [made] the semi-final last year — it’s so much confidence to myself. I’m so happy.”
Davidovich Fokina and Vesely are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, June 29 in the second round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches in the first round as the likes of Djokovic, Alcaraz, Murray, Shapovalov and others were in action.
