The worrying form of Daria Kasatkina has gotten worse and worse. The Russian attempted to steady herself in Abu Dhabi after losing 6-1, 6-1 to Varvara Gracheva in the opening round of the Australian Open, but she was only able to win one match. In just 78 minutes, she lost to rising star Zheng Qinwen, 6-1, 6-2, and was eliminated from the WTA 500 competition. The 25-year-old has failed to win more than three games in three of her four losses so far this season. In eight of her last nine races, she has been prevented from winning back-to-back. Yet she is a player ranked in the top 10 at the moment, having reached the semifinals at Roland-Garros and Rome earlier in 2022, as well as winning championships in San Jose and Granby in August.

In January, Rebecca Marino settled for a 1-3 record after only defeating Dalma Galfi in Auckland. She has now amassed five victories in the Middle East, spread across Doha and Abu Dhabi qualifying rounds. The Doha debutante defeated top 100 players Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Marie Bouzkova to secure her place in the main draw. After a ten-year absence, she regained the top 100 in July of last year and solidified it with victories in the WTA 250 quarterfinals in Washington, DC, Granby, and Chennai, followed by a semifinal appearance at the 125K Tampico. Since returning to the sport in 2018, she is attempting to win her second WTA 500 main draw match (d. Heather Watson at 2022 Eastbourne).
