Despite not being the favorite in either of her two qualifiers, Olga Danilovic advanced to the main draw. Misaki Doi and Harmony Tan both took her to a third set before Danilovic showed greater resolve and fitness to come through. For Danilovic, a clay court specialist who has won all six of her titles, including five ITF and one WTA, these two qualifier victories will go a long way toward restoring her confidence. It’s even more special because this is Danilovic’s first tournament away from clay this season. Can she now control her 21-year-old Russian opponent, who appears to be more of a surface player?
Kamilla Rakhimova, unlike her opponent in this match, is coming off a strong performance in the qualifiers. Rakhimova, who, like Danilovic, has six titles at all levels, crushed Oksana Selekhmetova 6-2, 6-2 and was on her way to doing the same to Oceane Dodin when her opponent retired. Rakhimova is coming off a first-round exit at Monastir, and hasn’t won consecutive matches in a hardcourt WTA tournament since reaching the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Summer Set 2 in January.
