Daniil Medvedev made history when he ended 2021 as the player ranked 2nd in the ATP rankings. Here we look at his ranking history.
Daniil Medvedev saw his ranking improve considerably due to becoming a Grand Slam winner at the end of 2021. The 25-year old Russian, who’s been a professional since 2014, also played a part in denying history.
His 2021 US Open final opponent was Novak Djokovic. The Serb, who had won all three Grand Slams prior to that, was on course for a calendar Grand Slam.
However, Medvedev denied him and in the process became a first-time Grand Slam winner. Given he started the year by losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open final, it was a nice turnaround to end the year.
He also became the first player besides Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray to be ranked in the top 2 of the ATP rankings.
Medvedev’s trek to the top of the mountain was not an easy one. But given the work he’s put in and the results he’s had, few can say he didn’t deserve it.
It has been a steady trudge up to nearly the top of the rankings for Daniil Medvedev. When he started his pro career in 2014, he was 1753 but ended the year in 655.
Thereafter it has been steady progression up the top of the ladder. The following year saw him break the top 400, the year after he broke into the top 100.
The top 50 was the next barrier to be successfully breached in 2017, with further inroads into the top 20 and top 10 following in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Now, he’s in the top 2 – and few would be surprised if he went on to dethrone Djokovic atop the rankings in 2022.

Yes, Daniil Medvedev won his maiden Grand Slam in 2021 when he clinched the US Open. He beat Novak Djokovic to win the Slam, thus denying the Serbian the chance to pull off the calendar Grand Slam.
Before that, Medvedev contested the final of the US Open in 2019 as well as the Australian Open 2021 final. In both cases, he finished as runner-up.
The two have faced off against each other on 10 separate occasions. In those encounters, it is Djokovic who emerged victorious more often than not.
The Serbian beat the Russian on 6 occasions. However, that Medvedev managed to beat on four separate occasions says a lot about him.
It’s also worth noting that off Medvedev’s 6 losses, one of them was a retirement.
Medvedev has won a total of 13 tournaments in his career. A detailed look at his title wins can be seen in the table below.

Daniil Medvedev turned pro in 2014. Since then, he’s been on a steady rise in the world of tennis and, as of now, looks set to seize his moment.
No, Medvedev has never played against Andre Agassi. Given the former began his pro career well after the latter’s retirement, this was never a possibility.
This is a subjective question, although based on achievements Djokovic trumps almost every tennis player on the planet. Medvedev is no exception to that rule; he cannot be compared to the Serbian as of now.
