The tournament announced on Tuesday that world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev has signed up to compete in Los Cabos. Medvedev, 26, will make his professional debut in Los Cabos on the hard courts. Medvedev made his debut in Acapulco in February. Medvedev enjoyed the atmosphere in Mexico so much that he will be performing in Los Cabos this summer. The world no. 2 reached the semifinals in Acapulco for the first time before losing to Rafael Nadal. He didn’t stand a chance against Nadal, who cruised to a 6-3 6-3 victory.

“I don’t think I played great today, generally my level was not good enough to compete against a player like Nadal. Too many mistakes and the scores say it,” Medvedev said after the match at the time. “I feel like I was missing some energy today, unfortunately.”

“I felt the support of the fans but I didn’t manage to turn my fire up. But Mexican crowd was good and I would be happy to comeback in Acapulco,” the world no. 2 added.

Impending surgery

Medvedev didn’t have a great time during the Miami Open 2022, and there was a reason for that. Medvedev decided to have his hernia repaired after losing in the Miami quarterfinals to Hubert Hurkacz. Medvedev is now expected to miss a significant amount of time, possibly the entire clay season.

“Hi everyone. The last months I have been playing with a small hernia. Together with my team I have decided to have a small procedure done to fix the problem. I will likely be out for the next 1 – 2 months and will work hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for all the support,” Medvedev tweeted on Saturday.

The Los Cabos event takes place from August 1 to 6, following Wimbledon. Medvedev is expected to be one of the top contenders for the title in this year’s Los Cabos player field.
