She had participated in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open and had advanced to the Bad Homburg semifinals. The six-time WTA champion will attempt to advance to her second season semifinal on Thursday.

The second seed Martina Trevisan opponent in the second round, withdrew from the match even before it began, giving Zhang Shuai an easy passage into the quarterfinals. The Chinese player, who advanced to the last eight in Cincinnati last week, is currently playing in her second consecutive quarterfinal and fifth of the season. The 33-year-old had destroyed Katerina Siniakova to start her Cleveland campaign, winning 6-2, 6-1. She lost the first game of the match after being broken, but she didn’t make a mistake after that, converting 5 of 5 break points to defeat the Czech in an hour. Zhang has competed in two finals this year, taking home the trophy in Lyon and coming in second place after having to withdraw from the final in Birmingham.
