In the Italian Open’s opening round, Coco Gauff will try to maintain her perfect record of three wins. She has defeated players like Ons Jabeur in 2020, Maria Sakkari, Aryna Sabalenka, and Angelique Kerber in 2021, 2021, and 2022, respectively, in this tournament. At the age of 17, she stormed into her first WTA 1000 semifinal at this location. The teen finished the previous season with a runner-up finish at Roland-Garros after going 10-4 on clay courts. She didn’t play as well in the first two clay-court competitions of the year and only claimed a single victory in each of Stuttgart and Madrid, where her doubles team did make it to the finals.

The former world No. 27 left her mark in other instances even though three of her five previous main draw appearances in Rome ended in the first or second round. In order to advance to the quarterfinals in 2020 and the third round in 2022, she needed to win three straight sets against Elena Rybakina and Petra Martic.
