Coco Gauff vs Julia Grabher will take place in the second round of the 2023 French Open on May 31.
Rebeka Masarova, a fellow former Roland-Garros Junior Champion and world No. 71, forced Coco Gauff to take the scenic route. She did, however, win more than 80% of her points on first serves and only lost one service game in the final two sets to pull off a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 comeback, a good start to her bid to defend runner-up points. The world No. 6 has always loved her time in Paris, but the last two years have been particularly memorable. She reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in 2021 and finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek last year. For the first time since Indian Wells, the youngster is being asked to win multiple matches in a week.
Julia Grabher was only a few points away from becoming a WTA champion in Rabat when she was defeated by Lucia Bronzetti. The Austrian swallowed the bitter taste of her Morocco trip and went on to defeat qualifier Arantxa Rus, 6-2, 6-3, for her first career grand slam victory and a memorable Roland-Garros main draw debut. There hasn’t been a lack of milestones for her recently. From August to October of last year, she won three clay-court titles in Europe, two at the W60 level and one at the 125K Bari, while also reaching the third round in Charleston and Rome. The 26-year-old is ranked 198th in April 2022 and is on the verge of breaking into the top 60.

Coco Gauff has a 1-0 lead. This April, the pair met for a BJK Cup match on the outdoor hard courts in Delray Beach, and the teenager won 6-1, 6-3 in 63 minutes. Julia Grabher has no reason to believe she can overcome her 0-8 record against top 25 players and extend her best Grand Slam run.
