Marin Cilic and Oscar Otte will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Wednesday, October 5.
In Tel Aviv last week, Marin Cilic made his first appearance on indoor hard courts this year. He only needed two victories to advance to the championship match. He was given a walkover by Liam Broady in the quarterfinal, defeated first-time semifinalist Constant Lestienne (in SF), and then succumbed to the former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the match that decided the championship. For the powerful Croatian, this was a strong beginning to the season’s closing stretch. Last October, he produced a couple of significant results on indoor hard courts, finishing second in Moscow and first in Saint Petersburg. He has performed well on the surface throughout his career.
In Sofia’s first round last week, Oscar Otte defeated ATP Tour main-draw newcomer Dragos Nicolae Madaras in straight sets to go back on the winning track. However, in the second round, he blew a set lead and lost to Kamil Majchrzak, which demoralised him. Since recovering from knee surgery a few weeks ago, the German has struggled with confidence, and it has occasionally shown in his performance, particularly in crucial situations. He blew a match point against David Goffin in the Davis Cup, lost to Gregoire Barrere in Metz after blowing big leads in both sets, and did the same thing last week against the Pole.
Marin Cilic and Oscar Otte are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Wednesday, October 5. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
