Marin Cilic and Constant Lestienne will take on each other in the semifinal of the 2022 ATP Tel Aviv Open on Saturday, October 1.
Marin Cilic, the second seed, advanced to the semifinals after a walkover from British qualifier Liam Broady in the quarterfinals on Friday. The Croatian is in his fifth semi final of the season and is ranked 16th in the world. However, the 20-time tour-level champion has yet to play in a final this year. In January, the 33-year-old reached back-to-back semi finals in two Adelaide tournaments. He also reached the final four of the French Open and Queen’s. Cilic has been particularly effective on hard courts, where he has a 17-10 record in 2022. He had started his Tel Aviv campaign with a second-round comeback victory over Dominic Thiem. Cilic had lost the first set in a tiebreak, but he came back to win 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 44 minutes. He had only played one match prior to the semifinals.
Constant Lestienne of France reached his first ATP semifinal after defeating fourth seed Maxime Cressy in a nail-biting quarterfinal on Friday. After being outplayed in the first set tiebreak, Lestienne re-entered the match with a solitary break in the second. Neither player was broken in the third before the world no. 68 won the tiebreaker over the world no. 34. Cressy served 28 aces to Lestienne’s 9 in the two-hour and 27-minute victory. In addition, the Frenchman hit 23 fewer winners than Cressy’s 54. However, he prevailed in the crucial moments. While he served both of the breakpoints that the American held, he only converted one in the second set. This was Lestienne’s third straight victory over a player ranked higher than him. This year, Lestienne has three Challenger titles from five finals.
