Francisco Cerundolo and Hubert Hurkacz will take on each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Astana Open on Monday, October 3.
After two straight failed attempts at the US Open and Metz, where he was stunned in the second round and was unable to defend his title, Hubert Hurkacz lost one spot and left the top 10 in the ATP rankings. The Pole has spent the entire year in and around the top 10 thanks to his ability to produce some impressive results in significant competitions that have obscured his numerous stumbles in the early going of tour-level events. In these nine months, he has lost consecutive matches in eight tournaments, but he has also won the Halle’s 500 and placed in four quarterfinal or higher finishes in Masters events.
Recently, Francisco Cerundolo made his Davis Cup debut. He gave a couple of challenging performances, but they weren’t enough to defeat Jannik Sinner and Borna Coric (who both fell in three sets) (4-6 6-7). Given that the young Argentinian player had very little prior experience on the main tour and on hard grounds, this season has been quite beneficial for him. Three months ago, in Bastad, on the clay courts, he won his first ATP championship. Since then, he has made significant progress on hard courts and qualified for the Miami Masters semifinals.
