Casper Ruud probably had no idea the magnitude of the negative consequences when he organised and embarked on a Latin American exhibition tennis tour at the end of the 2022 season. The lack of a sufficient off-season after a demanding and arduous year in 2022 appears to have had an impact on his performance thus far in 2023, which he publicly acknowledged a few weeks ago. In recent years, he has established himself as a consistent performer on clay, making his current difficulties on the surface concerning. Given his previous accomplishments, it will be interesting to see what level of performance he can deliver at the Rome Masters. In his previous three appearances, he made it at least to the round of 16.
Arthur Rinderknech won his first clay match of the year and his first competitive match since retiring at the Miami Masters, defeating Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli 6-4 6-3 in the first round of the Rome Masters. This victory also ended the Frenchman’s five-match losing streak in first-round matches at Masters events. Prior to this week, his only previous advance to the second round at this level came in Miami last year, when he was eliminated by a seeded opponent, Hubert Hurkacz, at that stage of the tournament.
