Pablo Carreno Busta and Tommy Paul are scheduled to take on one another in the third round of the 2022 Paris Masters on Thursday, November 3.
Carreno Busta was not a strong favorite in his second round match against Denis Shapovalov, but he still needed two hours and 16 minutes to defeat the Canadian and advance to the third round. The Spaniard won 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the third round in Paris for just the second occasion in his career, having previously reached the quarterfinals in 2020. Carreno Busta was broken three times in the match, despite enduring 12 aces and a staggering 86% first serve points won from Shapovalov. He also found his way around his opponent’s serve only twice. That did not stop him from seizing pivotal moments in the game, allowing him to come away with the victory.
Rafael Nadal may have had a few other things on his mind going into his second-round match, as we had referenced in our preview of the game. And that appeared to have been the case throughout the match as well, as Paul overcame a first-set deficit to pull off a startling victory. Paul triumphed 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1, later admitting it was the best performance of his career. He also prevented his opponent from achieving the top ranking on the ATP charts at the end of the year. The American won the tie-breaker and then defeated his more famous opponent twice more to win the match.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Tommy Paul are scheduled to take on one another in the third round of the 2022 Paris Masters on Thursday, November 3. The tournament is scheduled to be held from October 31 to November 6, 2022.
