Caroline Garcia and Yulia Putinseva will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 27.
Caroline Garcia has a respectable 20-9 win-loss record, but her expectations have not been met this season. She lost both of her finals, to Alycia Parks in Lyon and Donna Vekic in Monterrey, lost twice on the Sunshine Swing to Sorana Cirstea, and lost in the first round of two WTA 1000s (Dubai and Miami). Anastasia Potapova denied her a place in the Stuttgart semifinals last week, despite having a set lead. After winning four titles in the 2022 season, including the WTA Finals and Cincinnati, the Frenchwoman has slowed down; the previous year also included a semifinal at the US Open and a return to the top four.
Yulia Putintseva was relieved to have defeated Claire Liu in the first round, 6-4, 6-4, without any further complications. She fell behind 2-0 in the first set and had to save breakpoints in the final two service games. She has a shaky track record at the Madrid Open, having finished in the first or second round on four of her five previous visits. Her best result came in the 2019 edition, when she advanced to the third round after defeating Irina-Camelia Begu and Pauline Parmentier. The Kazakh may have begun the year with a quarterfinal appearance in Hobart, but she has exited all seven of her subsequent tournaments, from the Australian Open to Charleston, in the first or second round.
