On Monday, January 30, the fourth-ranked player in the world, Caroline Garcia, will face Tereza Martincova, who is rated 74th, in the opening round of the 2023 WTA Lyon Open. Garcia has had a respectable start to the year, but she would have preferred to have fared far better than her last week’s fourth-round defeat from the Australian Open. She immediately began to descend toward Magda Linette. The Frenchwoman had previously won both of her singles matches in the United Cup. Last season, she rose to fourth in the rankings after winning four titles. She then battled hard to defeat Katerina Siniakova in the Adelaide International 2 first match.
Martincova previously reached the top 40 in the world, but when the new rankings are announced on Monday, she will have dropped to the 87th spot. And that can be attributed to her bad performance last year and her mediocre start this year. Martincova has only won a couple of qualifiers out of the three tournaments she’s competed in this year. Despite being a 2/5 favourite in the Auckland Open going into her first round match, Martincova fell to Julia Grabher. She then lost to Laura Siegemund after being given a 1/2 chance to win.
