Caroline Garcia vs Mayar Sherif will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Madrid Open on April 29.
Caroline Garcia made a strong showing against Yulia Putintseva to mark her return to Madrid after a four-year absence. The Frenchwoman, a semifinalist in 2018 and a quarterfinalist in 2014, won 6-3, 6-4 in 95 minutes by smashing 45 winners to 24 unforced errors and saving seven of eight breakpoints. She has participated in this competition six times and has won multiple games on four of those occasions. The defending WTA Finals champion will be hoping for a successful stay here after a few unfavourable events this season, including losses to Sorana Cirstea twice in the Sunshine Swing and final losses in Lyon and Monterrey.
In Madrid, Mayar Sherif is making a main draw debut to remember. The Egyptian, who formerly attended a school in southeast Spain where she received her training, defeated Ukrainian opponent Anhelina Kalinina, the 30th seed, 6-2, 7-6. Given that Camila Giorgi retired from the tournament the previous day, it was her first full victory of the competition. In the first three months of the season, she struggled on hard courts and is now back on clay, where she is most at ease. She did, after all, take home four victories on the dirt last season, including three at the 125K level and one in Parma. She made her red clay debut in 2023 by placing in the semifinals of the W100 competition last week in Oeiras, Portugal.
