Caroline Garcia and Karolina Muchova will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Qatar Open on February 15.
This season, Caroline Garcia has accumulated 10 victories at the expense of three defeats, but she is unlikely to be content with the start. As the top seed and pursuing a second victory at home, she was defeated by unseeded Magda Linette in the fourth round of the Australian Open and lost to Alycia Parks, 7-6, 7-5, in the final of Lyon. After winning titles on all surfaces (Bad Homburg, Warsaw, Cincinnati, and WTA Finals) and reaching her first major semifinal in New York, she rose to the top five after falling outside the top 70 in June. She has a bye in Doha, where she has a 5-8 record in the main draw and has lost four of her eight matches in the first round.
Karolina Muchova defeated Martina Trevisan, who had advanced to the semifinals of the Roland-Garros, 6-2, 6-2, in 79 minutes to mark her three-year return to Doha. She started her first tournament after losing to Danielle Collins, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6, in the second round in Melbourne, by smashing 22 winners to the Italian’s eight, and saving both breakpoints. The former world No. 19 has produced two quarterfinal finishes since coming back from her injury break in March, in Tallinn in September and Auckland last month. The 2021 Australian Open semifinalist fell to Ons Jabeur in Berlin in her most recent top-10 match, but prior to that, she had a five-match winning streak against these rivals.
