Caroline Garcia and Camila Osorio will take on each other in the semi-final of the 2023 WTA Lyon Open on February 4.
Jasmine Paolini forced Caroline Garcia to perform at her peak behind serve in the quarterfinals. The number one seed had all the solutions; she smashed nine aces, broke late in each set, and overcame a break deficit in the second set to win 7-5, 7-5 and advance to the semifinals in Lyon for the second consecutive year. The hometown player’s journey hasn’t been easy; she still feels bad about losing to Magda Linette in the fourth round of the Australian Open. In the first round, she defeated Tereza Martincova in a tiebreak, and in the second round, she overcame a set deficit to defeat four-time WTA indoor champion Alison van Uytvanck. In the Lyon semifinals a year ago, the world No. 5 was defeated 6-2, 7-5 by eventual champion Zhang Shuai. Her career has since taken on new life, and at the time, she was ranked 74th. Since the beginning of June, she has competed in six semifinal matches, turning four of them into finals and victories at Bad Homburg, Warsaw, Cincinnati, and the WTA Finals.
A game of cat and mouse lasted an hour and a half between Camila Osorio and qualifier and Adelaide finalist Linda Noskova. She trailed 1-3 in the first set and was one game away from losing the second, but she capitalised on the teenager from the Czech Republic’s numerous errors to win the quarterfinal, 6-4, 7-6. She is competing in just her third indoor professional tournament and first-ever tour event. Her previous best performance inside a building was a fourth-place finish at the 125K Midland race in November. After defeating Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier 7-6, 7-5 and third seed Alize Cornet 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, she was already having a memorable week. Since reaching the Bogota semifinal in April, she had not won more than two consecutive matches at any level before arriving in Lyon. Near the end of 2022, she fell as low as 86th. The Colombian, who is seeking her first final since missing five championship points in Monterrey last year, has a 3-3 record in WTA semifinals (2-0 on hard).

0-0. Following her victories in Strasbourg in 2016 and 2019, where she finished second, Caroline Garcia will be the favourite to advance to her third singles final of her career in France. In her five encounters with players ranked in the top 10, Camila Osorio has only triumphed once; in Tenerife, in October 2021, she beat sixth-ranked Elina Svitolina in three sets.
