Tereza Martincova was defeated 6-4, 7-6 by Caroline Garcia in the opening round despite having three times as many winners (45) as the Czech. She recently had a disappointing end to her Australian campaign, losing to Magda Linette in the Melbourne fourth round and Belinda Bencic in the Adelaide quarterfinal. She has advanced past this point for a quarterfinal in 2020 and a semifinal in 2022, but this is the fourth time in a row that she has reached Lyon’s second round. The top seed hopes to advance to her eighth quarterfinal since the beginning of June, a stretch that includes victories at the WTA Finals, Bad Homburg, Warsaw, and Cincinnati.

Alison Van Uytvanck’s match against Tamara Korpatsch wasn’t particularly strong; she was broken four times and only managed to win a third of her second-serve points. However, the German player performed much worse than she did, and the Belgian won 6-2, 6-4 for her first victory since defeating Magda Linette in Hobart. The 28-year-old, who reached Lyon’s semifinals in 2020 and 2022, is a generally dangerous player indoors as four of her five WTA titles have been won there. She hasn’t advanced past the second round of a WTA tournament since’s-Hertogenbosch in the grass court season, so she enters this week with a poor record.
