The main tour experience and physical preparedness of Jenson Brooksby made the difference in his first-round matchup against the gifted Tung-lin Wu. Although he wasn’t the best player on the court for the entire of the match, he was able to win the first set in a tiebreaker and then dominated the deciding set to clinch the victory, 7-6 3-6 6-0. The American teenager put on yet another spectacular display. His impressive performances in major tournaments in the second half of the 2021 season and his strong start to the 2022 season raised some eyebrows, but he entirely lost his way once the clay swing began, and he most recently sustained an injury last month.
This week’s first round saw Soon Woo Kwon defeat a player with little experience in three uninspiring sets. He blew a 5-3 lead in the second set, but quickly recovered and beat fellow countryman Yunseong Chung in the decisive match. In the first nine months of the 2022 season, the top-ranked South Korean (excluding ATP Seoul) has participated in 24 tour-level events, but he hasn’t been able to sweep back-to-back main-draw matches in any of them. He has already dropped out of the top 100 in the ATP rankings, and he would fall even further if he failed to hold onto the 250 points he gained by winning his first ATP championship in Nur-Sultan last September.
Jenson Brooksby and Soon Woo Kwon are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Korea Open on Thursday, September 29. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 24 and end on October 2.
